Chalmers was founded in 1829. The university is named after its major benefactor, William Chalmers, one of the directors of Swedish East India Company. It starts as the ˇ§Industrial Schoolˇ¨ under the name ˇ§Chalmersska Sl?jdskolanˇ¨ (Chalmers School of Arts and Crafts). On 1st July 1994, Chalmers ceased to be a state-owned institution and became an independent foundation, Chalmers tekniska h?gskola AB(Chalmers University of Technology Foundation). After 176 years, Chalmers still keeps its tradition as an ˇ§industrial Schoolˇ¨, focusing its research and education within the area of technology, natural science and architecture.

As one of the leading university of technology in Europe, Chalmers has the right to award many different degrees in a variety of subject.

Bachelor/Master of Science degree In 16 departments [figure1], Chalmers now can provide Bachelor or Master of Science degree in 17 different majors [figure2].

Bachelor degree: BSc (Bachelor of Science degree), BScEng (Bachelor of Science in Engineering), Marine Engineering degree and Master Mariner degree

Required credits: 120 credits, at least 40 credits of them should be taken at Courses of Chalmers. The dissertation is included in the 40 credits. Duration: 3 years

Master degree: MArch( Master of Architecture), MSc( Master of Science), MScEng( Master of Science in Engineering)

Required credits: 180 credits, at least 60 credits of them should be taken at Courses of Chalmers. The dissertation is included in the 60 credits. Duration: 4.5 years

PhD

A PhD degree program comprises a total of four years of full-time study. A person who has a doctoral position normally teaches on the undergraduate program, equivalent to a maximum of 20% of the working time. A PhD degree must be taken within five years.

University Certificate

The BSc degree is awarded when course requirements of at least 80 credits with a certain specialization is fulfilled.

International Master Program

In areas of particular strength, Chalmers offers 25 specially designed International Master's Program. These are taught entirely in English, lasted for three semesters, and are opened to applicants from the whole world.
Required credits: 60 credits, including the thesis work (20 credits). Duration: 1.5 year

UNITECH International

The program is provided by its member universities: eight leading European engineering institutions, RWTH Aachen, UPC Barcelona, TU Delft, Chalmers, G?teborg, Imperial College London, Politechinco di Milano, ParisTech and ETH Z?rich. Only students from those 8 universities can apply UNITECH International. Students who are taking part in the UNITECH International Exchange benefit from the excellent connection between management studies and core engineering profiles.

Exchange Program Chalmers has partner universities around the world. Besides the universities in European Country, there are also partner universities in Australia, Canada, China, Japan, Mexico, Singapore, USA and Taiwan. And there are plenty of exchange programs every year.

Information Technology University (IT University)

The IT University of G?teborg is build up by both Chalmers and G?terborg University. It focuses on research and education in the field of Information technology. While its first program began in autumn 2001, there are only 120 students. Now, three year later, the number of students has increase to almost 900. IT University provides education of both Bachelor and Master degree (in Swedish), as well as the international degrees (in English).
