As a country with only 9 million people, it is hard to imagine how well and wide Sweden has developed in their sports. With the help of a Swedish classmate of mine, whose name is Magnus Eriksson, I gain a lot more than I thought before. Being qualified to the 2006 Football World Cup in Germany, football is no doubt the most popular sport in Sweden and is also best well-known by people around the world. Swedish people always have fun watching their team playing in this huge competition. Although there are several famous Swedish football players, they usually play in the football leagues in other countries. As a result, it is the great event of world cup can Swedish people expect to see their players gathering together to play for Sweden. With numerous world champion titles, ice hockey is definitely a big sport in Sweden. It is difficult not to find a variety of hockey equipments when waking into any ordinary sport shop in Sweden. Therefore, people start to play hockey at quite young ages and most of them join different levels of hockey clubs at different ages. Although there is no such a giant cup like world cup in football every 4 years, quite a few international games are actually held by IIHF (International Ice Hockey Federation) for various levels of players every year. Another fact is that several Swedish players are now playing in NHL (National Hockey League) in USA, and Swedish people sometimes care quite much about their favorite NHL teams, especially when it comes to the final games. There are even some places, such as some bars and pubs, providing people to watch NHL games together. So, hockey is another important activity in Swedish peopleˇ¦s lives. Besides football and ice hockey, there are much more than we can imagine that Swedish people are playing. For example, handball is in fact a very popular sport in Sweden too. The Swedish handball team has already won several Europe and world titles. Besides, unihoc(floorball) is a quite new sport which has just been notified for perhaps 15 years. However, now it becomes so popular that we often see people on the roads holding a stick which looks very similar to a hockey stick. After discussing with Magnus, we believed that unihoc must have been evolved from ice hockey because we think unihoc is a simplified way of playing ice hockey. |
